ABSTRACT
Haemodialysis is a life-sustaining treatment for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), yet it imposes significant physical, emotional, and lifestyle challenges. Empowering patients through education and self-management has emerged as a cornerstone of effective nursing care in this population. This review explores the pivotal role of nurses in facilitating empowerment among haemodialysis patients, emphasizing strategies that enhance patient knowledge, engagement, and autonomy in managing their condition. Education is shown to be a critical factor in improving treatment adherence, dietary control, fluid balance, and medication management. Nurse-led interventions-such as individualized teaching, motivational interviewing, and culturally tailored programs-demonstrate positive outcomes in patient self-efficacy and clinical stability. The review also highlights the psychosocial components of care, addressing how nurses support patients in coping with anxiety, depression, and social isolation. Incorporating digital tools, such as telehealth and mobile apps, into patient education further strengthens self-care practices and accessibility, especially in underserved areas. However, barriers such as health literacy gaps, socioeconomic challenges, and resource constraints must be considered in program design and implementation. This article underscores the importance of holistic, patient-centered nursing approaches that integrate education with emotional support, behavioral change, and technology to empower haemodialysis patients. Ultimately, empowering these patients leads to improved health outcomes, better quality of life, and reduced healthcare burden. The review calls for ongoing research, innovation, and policy support to embed structured education and self-management strategies into routine dialysis care, ensuring equitable and sustainable nursing practices across diverse settings
