ABSTRACT

When the pandemic struck, most students struggled in mathematics, especially with the new set-up. The goal of this study is to determine and understand the challenges learners faced while learning mathematics related subjects during the pandemic. The researcher aims to answer the following questions: (1) What are the challenges encountered in mathematics related subjects during COVID-19? (2) What are the factors that affect to the students’ difficulty in mathematics? (3) What are the coping strategies of the students in dealing mathematics during pandemic? Participants were 12, Grade 11 STEM students at Samar National School and were given a total of 5 questions about the challenges they experienced to broaden researcher's understanding of the situation. As a result, it was proved that some students are facing challenges and difficulties in understanding mathematics related subject such as General Mathematics, Pre-Calculus, Statistics and Probability, and Basic Calculus. In conclusion, learners needed an assistance. Particularly, face-to-face assistance in dealing mathematics related subjects.

Key words: challenges in mathematics, mathematics related subjects, pandemic, face-to-face assistance, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), Samar National School
